Although this is a greenhouse perennial, fresh plants are invariably raised as annuals, flowering from early winter to late spring. Clusters of flowers, 1in (25mm) wide, appear in pink, red, lilac, or blue-purple. The light-green, oval to heart-shaped leaves form an attractive backdrop for the flowers, but can create painful rashes, especially on wrists and arms, especially when damp.

Height: 9–15in (23–38cm)

Spread: 9–15in (23–38cm)

Winter: 45–50°F (7–10°C). Direct light without full sun, or indirect light

Summer: Not applicable

Care: When flowering, keep compost moist but not waterlogged. From when flower buds appear, feed every 10–14 days with weak liquid fertilizer. Discard plants when flowers fade.

Propagation: Buy fresh plants each year, or sow seeds during late spring and early summer and place in 59–68°F (15–20°C).
