Distinctive bromeliad, forming a large rosette of shiny, yellowish-green leaves, up to 18in (45cm) long and 2in (5cm) wide, with dark-green veins. The undersides are spotted purplish-red. During summer, it produces a flower spike up to 3ft (90cm) high, bearing tubular, rich sulfur-yellow flowers surrounded by green bracts.

Height: 1 ½–2ft (45–60cm)

Spread: 2–2 ½ft (60–75cm)

Winter: 55–64°F (13–18°C). Indirect light

Summer: 64–80°F (18–27°C). Indirect light or light shade

Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and the urn filled with water; in summer, water more freely but ensure compost is well drained, and regularly top up the water in the urn. Feed with weak liquid fertilizer every 4–5 weeks during summer. Repot in spring, usually every 3 years.

Propagation: In spring, remove offsets, transfer to individual pots, and place in 64–70°F (18–21°C).
