Saffron Spike, Zebra Plant: Aphelandra squarrosa
Evergreen shrub with lance-shaped, dark-green leaves, up to 9in (23cm) long, and veins heavily lined in ivory. Yellow, cone-shaped flower heads, 3–4in (7.5–10cm) long, appear from mid- to late summer. ‘Louisae’ has yellow flowers streaked red and slightly narrower leaves, with bold white markings along the veins. Other forms include Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Brockfeld’ (crinkle-edged leaves with ivory lines), Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Dania’ (compact, with white veins), and Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Leopoldii’ (pale yellow flowers and dark-green leaves with white veins).
