Earlier known as Beloperone guttata, this distinctive shrub-like, evergreen perennial has soft green leaves and shrimp-like flowers formed of colorful bracts and inconspicuous white flowers from spring to midwinter.

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist, especially if the temperature falls; in summer, water compost freely. From late spring to late summer, feed every 2–3 weeks. Repot in early spring when roots fill the pot, usually every 2–3 years. Alternatively, top-dress plants in large pots with fresh compost. |

Propagation: Take 2–3in (5–7.5cm) cuttings in early spring and insert in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand. Place in 64–70°F (18–21°C). |
