Also known as Parodia mammulosa, this easily grown desert cactus has a globular, dark-green body that is depressed and spineless at the top. It reveals 18–20 deeply notched ribs, with yellow-brown and brown-tipped spines. During most of summer, it has yellow flowers with a red stripe on the outer petals.

Height: 4in (10cm)

Spread: 3–7in (7.5–18cm), then spreading

Winter: 41–50°F (5–10°C). Full sun

Summer: 50–75°F (10–24°C). Full sun

Care: In winter, keep compost dry, especially if the temperature falls below the level indicated; in summer, keep compost moist and feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer.

Propagation: Sow seeds in spring and place in 75°F (24°C).
