Earlier known as Cordyline terminalis and Dracaena terminalis, this evergreen has lance-shaped, mid- to deep-green leaves flushed with red, purple, or cream. Cultivars include ‘Guilfoylei’ (leaves striped red and pink or white), ‘Red edge’ (green, streaked red), and ‘Tricolor’ (red and purple).

Height: 1 ½–3ft (45–90cm) in an indoor pot

Spread: 15–18in (38–45cm) in an indoor pot

Winter: 50–55°F (10–13°C). Direct light without full sun

Summer: 55–75°F (13–24°C). Direct light without full sun, or light shade

Care: In winter, keep compost lightly moist; in summer, water more freely and feed every 2 weeks. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot, usually every 2–3 years.

Propagation: During midsummer, cut up the stems of old and leggy plants into 3in (7.5cm) pieces. Insert them in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand and place in 64–70°F (18–21°C).
