October Daphne, October Plant: Sedum sieboldii

Sometimes sold as Hylotelephium sieboldii, this succulent plant has long, spreading stems with rounded leaves that almost encircle them. At first, they are gray-blue, but slowly change to brownish-green with a tinge of red around the edges. Clusters of pink flowers appear at the ends of the stems in early autumn. There are several variegated forms, including ‘Mediovariegatum,’ with slightly smaller leaves, yellow at the center, and surrounded by green.

Height: 2–3in (5–7.5cm)

Spread: 9–15in (23–38cm), then cascading

Winter: 45–50°F (7–10°C); survives 41°F (5°C) for short periods if compost is kept slightly drier. Full sun

Summer: 50–64°F (10–18°C). Full sun, or direct light without full sun

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist; in summer, water freely, but ensure good drainage and allow compost to become slightly dry between waterings, and feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer.

Propagation: Divide congested plants when repotting in spring and place in 55–59°F (13–15°C).
