Jasmine, Pink Jasmine, Poet’s Jassamine: Jasminum polyanthum
Slightly tender climber, with a twining nature and dark-green leaves formed of 5 or 7 leaflets. From early winter to late spring, it produces a wealth of strongly scented white, tubular flowers (pink when in bud) in lax clusters. When grown as a houseplant, it is usually bought twining around a circular, hooped framework, 10–12in (25–30cm) across. Later, and if transferred to a conservatory, it needs a large supporting framework.
Height: 3–10ft (90cm–3m) |
Spread: Climber |
Winter: 50–55°F (10–13°C); survives temperatures down to 45°F (7°C), but is then reluctant to flower so early in the year. Full sun |
Summer: 55–64°F (13–18°C). Direct light without full sun, or indirect light |
Care: In early winter, keep compost moist and increase watering frequency as buds start to form; in summer, water freely. Feed every 2 weeks from when buds start to appear. Repot pot-bound plants after the flowers fade. Alternatively, plants in large pots can be top-dressed with fresh compost. |
|
Propagation: Take 3–4in (7.5–10cm) stem-tip cuttings in late spring and insert in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand. Place in 61–64°F (16–18°C). |
