Striped Torch: Guzmania monostachya
Also known as Guzmania monostachia, this has narrow, green, slightly arching leaves that form a rosette. The plant develops large, poker-like flower spikes on stems about 15in (38cm) high, with small green bracts tipped with white and vertically striped in brown and purple. Toward its top, the bracts become vermilion. Only one flower stem is produced on each plant.
Height: 12–15in (30–38cm) |
Spread: 15–24in (38–60cm) |
Winter: 55–64°F (13–18°C). Indirect light |
Summer: 64–80°F (18–27°C). Light shade |
Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist, with the urn topped up with water; in summer, water freely, but ensure good drainage and keep the urn full. Throughout summer, feed every 4–5 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. |
|
Propagation: After flowering, the rosette dies and growth is taken over by offsets around it. Cut off the old plant to 2in (5cm) of its base. In spring, remove the offsets, transfer to individual pots, and place in 70°F (21°C). |
