Scarlet Star: Guzmania lingulata
Shiny, bright metallic-green leaves form a rosette. During summer, a flowering stem arises from it, with large red bracts surrounded by small, yellowish-white flowers. These are short-lived, but the bracts remain for several weeks. Guzmania lingulata minor, known as Orange Star and sometimes sold as Guzmania minor, has bright orange-red bracts.

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist and the urn topped up with water; in summer, water freely but ensure good drainage and keep the urn full. Throughout summer, feed every 4–5 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. |

Propagation: After flowering, the rosette dies and growth is taken over by offsets around it. Cut off the old plant to 2in (5cm) of its base. In spring, remove the offsets, transfer to individual pots, and place in 70°F (21°C). |
