Izote, Palm Lily, Spineless Yucca: Yucca elephantipes
Earlier known as Yucca guatemalensis, this tree-like evergreen develops stiff, green leaves up to 3ft (90cm) long, with rough edges. Old plants produce clusters of leaves at their tops, which has encouraged the common name, Palm Lily. Several other yuccas can be grown indoors, including Yucca aloifolia (Spanish Bayonet), which has stiff, sword-like leaves.

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist; in summer, water more freely and feed every 3–4 weeks in summer. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot (though it naturally grows in small pots). Top-dress large plants that cannot be repotted. |
