This bulbous plant has shiny, mid- to dark-green, wavy-edged leaves about 9in (23cm) long. Their ends curl downwards. In spring, a tall stem, 9in (23cm) or more high, bears a tapering flower head measuring about 4in (10cm). These are packed with small, bell-shaped, pale-pink flowers with greenish tips. Varieties exist in other colors.

Height: 10–12in (25–30cm), sometimes slightly more

Spread: 8–10in (20–25cm)

Winter: See below

Summer: See below

Care: In early autumn, plant a bulb in a pot 3–5in (7.5–13cm) wide, using soil-based, well-drained compost. Leave the top of the bulb about 1/4in (6mm) above the compost’s surface. Water the compost and place in 37–41°F (3–5°C) in light shade. Increase watering frequency once growth begins, and raise the temperature to 50–55°F (10–13°C). Position the pot in slightly stronger sunlight and keep compost moist. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back. Rest the plant; in autumn repot the bulb into fresh compost.

Propagation: Remove offset bulbs from mature bulbs in autumn, transfer to small pots, and place in 37–41°F (3–5°C). Sometimes, small bulbs are left around the main bulb to produce a larger plant.
