False Castor Oil Plant, Formosa Rice Tree, Glossy-Leaved Paper Plant, Japanese Fatsia, Paper Plant: Fatsia japonica
Often erroneously known as the Castor Oil Plant (Ricinus communis), this moderately hardy, shrub-like plant has large, palm-like, rich glossy-green leaves with 7–9 coarsely tooth-edged lobes. Clusters of rounded white flowers appear only occasionally on houseplants. ‘Variegata’ has white tips and edges to its leaves.
Height: 3–5ft (90cm–1.5m) indoors or in a conservatory |
Spread: 2 ½–4ft (75cm–1.2m) indoors or in a conservatory |
Winter: 37–45°F (3–7°C); avoid high temperatures. Direct light without full sun |
Summer: 50–64°F (10–18°C); avoid high temperatures. Indirect to bright light, without full sun |
Care: In winter, keep compost just moist; in summer, water more freely and feed every 2–3 weeks. Repot in spring, usually every year when young. |

Propagation: When repotting, remove and repot sucker-like shoots from around its base and place in 45–50°F (7–10°C) until rooted. |
