Easter Cactus: Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri
A distinctive forest cactus with many other names, including Hatiora gaertneri, Epiphyllum russellianum, and Schlumbergera gaertneri. This may appear to be a botanist’s jamboree; if in doubt, ask for the Easter Cactus. It is often confused with the Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera x buckleyi), but usually forms a much larger plant. Its stems, although usually flat, may have 3–5 angles and notched edges. From early to late spring, it bears bright red flowers, about 2 ½in (6cm) wide, with sharply pointed petals.
Height: 15–18in (38–45cm) |
Spread: 2 ½–3ft (75–90cm) |
Winter: 55–61°F (13–16°C). Full sun or direct light without full sun |
Summer: 50–55°F (10–13°C). In temperate climates, plants are often put outside in summer, in partial shade |
Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist; in spring, when flower buds form, increase the amount of water and keep compost moist but not waterlogged. After the flowers fade, keep compost moist but not saturated. During summer, feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot annually after the flowers fade. |
|
Propagation: Take cuttings during summer. Allow cut surfaces to dry, insert in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand, and place in 61–64°F (16–18°C). |
