Compass Barrel Cactus: Ferocactus acanthodes
Sometimes known as Ferocactus cylindraceus, this well-armed desert cactus has a spherical body, becoming elongated with age, with up to 23 ribs on its glaucous green body. Spines grow from raised gray, woolly areoles. The center spine of each group is long, red, and hooked. Yellow flowers, about 2in (5cm) long, only appear on mature plants.

Care: In winter, keep compost dry; in summer, water more frequently and feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. |

Propagation: Sow seeds in spring and place in 75°F (24°C). |
