Crab Cactus: Schlumbergera truncata
Also known as Epiphyllum truncatum and Zygocactus truncatus, this forest cactus is often confused with the Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera x buckleyi), which also has flattened stems. In the Crab Cactus, these flattened stems are usually 2–3in (5–7.5cm) long, with deeply incised notches along their edges. They are bright green at first, later red. From early to midwinter, it bears flowers about 2–3in (5–7.5cm) long, primarily pink to deep red, but also in shades of crimson, purple, blue, and white.
Height: 8–12in (20–30cm) |
Spread: 12–15in (30–38cm) |
Winter: 55–59°F (13–15°C). Full sun, or direct light without full sun |
Summer: In temperate climates, plants can be placed outside in partial shade; alternatively, keep at 50–55°F (10–13°C) |
Care: In autumn, keep compost barely moist, but increase watering as soon as flower buds form. When flowering, keep compost moist, but afterwards reduce the amount. In summer (perhaps while the plant is outdoors), keep compost evenly moist. From when flower buds form until flowers fade, feed every 10–14 days with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot annually after flowers fade. |
|
Propagation: Take cuttings during summer. Allow cut surfaces to dry, insert in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand, and place in 61–64°F (16–18°C). |
