Cardinal Flower: Sinningia cardinalis
Earlier known as Rechsteineria cardinalis and Gesneria cardinalis, this tuberous-rooted plant has spectacular, hooded, bright scarlet flowers with paler throats. They are 2in (5cm) long, borne in terminal clusters from early to late summer. The velvet-surfaced leaves are broadly oval and 4in (10cm) long.
