Cardinal Flower: Sinningia cardinalis

Earlier known as Rechsteineria cardinalis and Gesneria cardinalis, this tuberous-rooted plant has spectacular, hooded, bright scarlet flowers with paler throats. They are 2in (5cm) long, borne in terminal clusters from early to late summer. The velvet-surfaced leaves are broadly oval and 4in (10cm) long.

Height: 9–18in (23–45cm)

Spread: 10–12in (25–30cm)

Winter: Not applicable

Summer: 61–64°F (16–18°C). Direct light without full sun, or indirect light

Care: Keep compost moist but not waterlogged while the plant is flowering. If you decide not to discard the plant when flowers fade and leaves turn yellow, gradually cease watering, remove dead leaves and flowers and store tubers in 55°F (13°C) in a dry, airy place. Restart into growth in spring in 21°C (70°F), slowly increasing the amount of water. No feeding is necessary.

Propagation: Buy fresh plants each year.
