Palms and Cycads

Burmese Fishtail Palm, Clustered Fishtail Palm, Fishtail Palm, Tufted Fishtail Palm: Caryota mitis

PALMS introduce a restful, stately aura to homes, retaining their leaves throughout the year. Some are ideal for displaying on low tables, especially when young; others are more dramatic in corners of rooms or in conservatories. Mist their leaves regularly, especially if the atmosphere is dry and the temperature high.

Fishtail-type palm with ragged-edged, wedge-shaped, thick, dark-green leaflets, eventually 6in (15cm) long and 4in (10cm) wide, borne on arching stems.

Height: 5–8ft (1.5–2.4m) in a pot indoors

Spread: 2–3 ½ft (60cm–1m) in a pot indoors

Winter: 55–64°F (13–18°C). Full sun

Summer: 64–70°F (18–21°C). Direct light without full sun, or indirect light

Care: In winter, keep compost evenly moist; in summer, water moderately without continually saturating the compost, and feed every 3–4 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot, though this vigorous palm is best restricted to a small pot. If in a large pot, do not repot but replace some of the soil with fresh compost.

Propagation: In spring, remove basal suckers, transfer to individual pots, and place in 64°F (18°C).
