BEEFSTEAK BEGONIA
BOTANICAL NAME
- Begonia erythrophylla
The beefsteak begonia is a plant your grandparents may have had. It is an older variety, but beautiful. This is an example of a rhizomatous begonia and it, like others in that group, have thick, succulent stems that grow over the soil surface, sending out foliage on the top of the stem and roots on the bottom.This particular begonia has large round leaves that are dark green with a burgundy underside; they resemble large lily pads. In the winter, they will send up a spray of delicate flowers.
LIGHT PREFERENCE
This begonia can grow in a north window but may not bloom and prefers an eastern exposure.
WATERING
Water the begonia thoroughly, never allowing it to stand in water. Then let it dry out a bit before watering again. Err on the dry side with this plant to avoid rotting. Use a well-drained potting medium.
FLOWER
In the wintertime, sprays of delicate flowers are on stems above the plant. They can be a light pink to white.
SIZE
This can become quite a sizeable begonia, at least 2 feet (0.6 m) tall and 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 m) wide.
PROPAGATION
Take cuttings of the succulent stem and pin the sections to a moist medium.
CULTIVAR
Not a cultivar of the beefsteak, but another rhizomatous begonia is ‘Madame Queen.’ It displays the same dark-green leaf with burgundy undersides, but has an extremely ruffled edge that displays the burgundy underside on the top edge of the leaf.

ÁNH SÁNG
Thu Hải Đường này có thể được trồng ở cửa sổ phía Bắc nhưng khả năng cao là cây sẽ không nở hoa, cây cũng phù hợp với cửa sổ phía Đông.
NƯỚC
Tưới nước kỹ cho cây, không để cây đọng trong nước. Sau đó để khô một chút trước khi tưới lại. Hãy giữ cho thân cây khô để tránh thối rữa. Sử dụng bầu thoát nước tốt để trồng cây.
HOA
Vào mùa đông, những bông hoa mỏng manh xuất hiện trên thân cây. Chúng có thể có màu hồng nhạt đến trắng.
