Insectivorous Houseplants

Insectivorous plants (insectivores) reveal how nature has adapted some plants to live in places where their roots cannot gain sufficient nutrients from the soil. Instead, adaptations allow them to trap and digest insects. Some, such as the Venus Fly Trap, use hinged jaws that snap shut when triggered by an insect, a few use sticky surfaces, and others have pitcher-like heads into which insects fall.

Insectivorous plants are not easy to grow indoors; they need to be watered with rainwater and kept in a humid atmosphere. They usually grow in marshy ground and need high humidity and indirect light. In winter, 50–55°F (10–13°C) suits them, with a few degrees higher in summer. They need light shade, especially in summer. Use clean rainwater to keep the compost slightly moist. If your home has a dry atmosphere, domed plastic covers create a humid environment for them.

Forms a rosette of light-green leaves with hinged jaws. When a fly wanders into the open jaws, it touches trigger hairs that instantly close them. Digestive juices break down the insect’s body and the plant absorbs the nutrients. Later, the hinged jaws open, ready to trap another fly.
