Stag Horn Fern: Platycerium bifurcatum

Also known as Platycerium alcicorne, this distinctive, tender fern develops antler-like, mid-green fronds covered with minute hairs. It is best displayed attached to a piece of wood or cork secured to a wall in a conservatory, or it can be suspended. When young, it can be grown in a pot. Platycerium grande (Elk Horn Fern) is similar but larger and may reach 5ft (1.5m) or more wide.

Height: 1 ½–2ft (45–60cm)

Spread: 1 ½–2 ½ft (45–75cm)

Winter: 45–55°F (7–13°C). Direct light without full sun, or indirect light

Summer: 55–75°F (13–24°C). Light shade

Care: In winter, keep compost slightly moist; in summer, water freely and feed every 4 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot in spring when roots fill the container, often annually when young but later every 2–3 years.

Propagation: Divide congested plants in spring and place in 55–61°F (13–16°C).
