Ribbon Plant, Saint Bernard’s Lily, Spider Ivy, Spider Plant, Walking Anthericum: Chlorophytum comosum
Evergreen perennial with long, narrow green leaves striped white. There are several attractive cultivars, including ‘Variegatum’ (green leaves edged white or cream), ‘Vittatum’ (central white strip, green edges), and ‘Mandanum’ (earlier listed as ‘Mandaianum,’ with a central yellow stripe and green edges). Plants develop long, stiff but flexible stems with small plantlets at their ends.
Height: 8–10in (20–25cm), then cascading and trailing |
Spread: 15–24in (38–60cm) |
Winter: 45–50°F (7–10°C). Direct light without full sun |
Summer: 50–64°F (10–18°C). Indirect light, or direct light without full sun |
Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist but not dry; in summer, water freely but ensure good drainage and feed every 10–14 days. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot, every year when young and, later, every other year. When congested, roots swell and push the plant out of the pot, making watering difficult. |
|
Propagation: Divide congested plants when being repotted. Also, peg down plantlets into compost. Place in 50–55°F (10–13°C) until established and showing signs of growth. |
