Orchid Cactus, Pond Lily Cactus: Epiphyllum ackermannii
Now known as Nopalxochia ackermanii, this forest cactus has leaning stems that need support when it is flowering—mainly in late spring and early summer, sometimes into midsummer. Many plants sold as Epiphyllum ackermanii are hybrids, which are easier to grow than the species. Hybrids are divided into two types: those with red or scarlet flowers, often 4–6in (10–15cm) wide; and those with yellow or white flowers, 4in (10cm) wide, which open during evenings (many reveal a sweet scent).
Height: 2–3ft (60–90cm) |
Spread: 10–12in (25–30cm) |
Winter: 50°F (10°C) in early to late winter; from late winter to mid-spring, increase this to 55°F (13°C). Direct light without full sun |
Summer: 55–70°F (13–21°C); from late summer to early winter, maintain 50–55°F (10–13°C). Direct light without full sun |
Care: From early to late winter, keep compost lightly moist, never letting it dry out. From late winter to early spring, slowly increase the amount of water. From mid-spring to late summer, keep compost moist but not waterlogged. From late summer to early winter, keep compost moist, watering when it shows signs of becoming dry. From when the flower buds start to form to when the last flower fades, feed every 2 weeks with weak, high-potash liquid fertilizer. Epiphyllums flower best when slightly pot-bound, but every 3 years repot them a short while after the last flower fades. |

Propagation: During midsummer, take 5–6in (13–15cm) cuttings. Allow the cuts to dry for a few days, then insert in sandy compost, and place in 70°F (21°C). |
