This cactus is initially globular, but later elongated and branching. It has 15 prominent ribs clothed in short, dark-brown spines. It is mainly grown for its scented pure-white flowers, 6in (15cm) long, which open during summer evenings. Of many hybrids, perhaps the most popular is Echinopsis ‘Green Gold,’ with golden-yellow flowers.

Height: 6in (15cm) or more

Spread: 3–5in (7.5–13cm)

Winter: 35–41°F (2–5°C); avoid high temperature to ensure the plant flowers well the following summer. Full sun

Summer: 50–70°F (10–21°C). Full sun, or direct light without full sun

Care: In winter, keep compost relatively dry; in summer, water freely. From late spring to late summer, feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer.
