King of the Bromeliads: Vriesea hieroglyphica
Distinctive bromeliad, with yellowish-green leaves, 2ft (60cm) long and up to 4in (10cm) wide, covered with irregular dark-purple markings. The flowering stem, often 2ft (60cm) long, arises from the plant’s center and bears pale-green bracts and yellow, tubular flowers.

Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and the urn filled with water; in summer, water more freely but ensure compost is well drained, and regularly top up the water in the urn. Feed every 4–5 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer during summer. Repot in spring, usually every 3 years. |
