Bulbs
BULBS, such as daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths, are nature’s powerhouses of stored energy. They are formed of fleshy leaves arising from a basal plate and tightly wrapped around each other. Although botanically different, corms, tubers, and rhizomes are often grouped with bulbs. Corms are swollen stem bases (crocuses, freesias, sparaxis), tubers are swollen roots or stems (dahlias), and rhizomes are horizontal stems, either wholly underground or partly above, (Lily-of-the-Valley, Bearded Irises).
Freesia, Florist’s Freesia: Freesia hybrids
These cormous hybrids are usually grown for flowering indoors from midwinter to spring. They have fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers in a wide color range, including white, yellow, blue, orange, pink, and red.
Height: 1 ½ft (45cm) |
Spread: 8–10in (20–25cm), when five corms are planted in a pot 5in (13cm) wide |
Winter: See below |
Summer: See below |
Care: From late summer to late autumn, plant 5 corms in a pot 5in (13cm) wide, using loam-based compost. Just cover the tops of the corms and sprinkle a 1in (25mm) layer of fine peat over the top. Initially, place in 41°F (5°C), keeping compost lightly moist. From mid-autumn, increase the amount of water; as growth begins, slowly raise the temperature to 55°F (13°C) and increase the amount of direct light. Keep compost moist while flowering; when flowers fade, reduce the amount of water and lower the temperature to 41°F (5°C). Allow the corms and compost to become completely dry. In late summer, remove the corms, store in a dry, frost-proof shed, and plant outdoors the following spring. |

Propagation: Use fresh corms each year for flowering indoors. Plants can also be raised from seeds sown in spring in 61°F (16°C). Before sowing, soak seeds in clean water for 24 hours. Germination takes up to 3 weeks. |
