This widely grown bulbous plant should not be confused with Amaryllis belladonna (Belladonna Lily), a popular bulbous, autumn-flowering plant grown outdoors in warm and temperate climates. Hippeastrums mainly flower in winter and spring, but with careful timing can flower any time of year. They have green, strap-like leaves and stiff, upright stems with 3–4 funnel-shaped flowers, 3in (7.5cm) wide, in a range of single and mixed colors.

Height: 12–15in (30–38cm)

Spread: 8–10in (20–25cm)

Winter: 55–61°F (13–16°C). Bright, indirect light when flowering

Summer: 55–61°F (13–16°C). Bright, indirect light when flowering

Care: Plant one bulb in a 5in (13cm)-wide pot, leaving half the bulb exposed. Give only a little water until growth begins, then water more freely and feed every 10 days with weak liquid fertilizer.

  • Bulbs of winter- and spring-flowering types are potted in early and mid-autumn.
  • Specially prepared bulbs for flowering in early winter are planted in late autumn.
  • For flowering during summer and early autumn, plant in early spring.

Propagation: Buy fresh bulbs each year. Alternatively, old bulbs can be restarted into growth. Gradually reduce the amount of water after plants flower and leaves turn yellow. Then, withhold water and allow compost to dry. Place in 41–45°F (5–7°C) until restarting into growth the following season.
