Christmas Cactus: Schlumbergera x buckleyi
The naming of this forest cactus is often confused and you might see it listed as Schlumbergera hybrida. It is a cross between Schlumbergera russelliana and Schlumbergera truncata (Crab Cactus). It is well known for its branching, flat stems with untoothed edges and joints every 2in (5cm). Its magenta or rose-colored flowers, 2in (5cm) long and 1 1/4in (3cm) wide, appear from mid- to late winter.
Height: 6–8in (15–20cm) |
Spread: 9–10in (23–25cm) |
Winter: 55–59°F (13–15°C). Full sun, or direct light without full sun |
Summer: In temperate climates, plants can be placed outside in partial shade; alternatively, keep at 50–55°F (10–13°C) |
Care: In autumn, keep compost barely moist, but increase the watering frequency as soon as flower buds form. When flowering, keep compost moist, but afterwards reduce watering frequency. In summer (if the plant is outdoors), keep compost evenly moist. From when flower buds form until flowers fade, feed every 10–14 days with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot annually after flowers fade. |
|
Propagation: Take cuttings during summer. Allow cut surfaces to dry, insert in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand, and place in 61–64°F (16–18°C). |
