Coleus, Flame Nettle, Painted Nettle, Poor Man’s Croton: Coleus blumei
Now botanically known as Solenostemon scutellarioides and earlier as Plectranthus scutellarioides, it is still known and sold as Coleus. It is a popular plant with richly colored, nettle-like leaves in brilliant shades of red, maroon, yellow, and green. They have scalloped or saw-toothed edges. Tubular blue and white flowers appear during late summer and into autumn, but are best nipped off to prevent them from detracting from the beauty of the leaves. There is a wide range of named hybrids, most with a bushy nature, but some trailing. They can be overwintered in warm rooms or heated greenhouses and conservatories, but are best discarded in early winter and replaced by fresh plants in early summer.
