Cineraria, Florist’s Cineraria: Senecio cruentus
Botanically known as Pericallis x hybrida, and earlier as Cineraria cruenta and Cineraria x hybrida, it produces masses of large, daisy-like flowers in flat or domed heads from late winter to midsummer. White, blue, purple, pink, and red flowers appear above mid-green, somewhat heart-shaped leaves up to 8in (20cm) across. Flower shapes vary. Grandiflora types have individual flowers 2–3in (5–7.5cm) wide on plants 1 ½–2ft (45–60cm) high; Multiflora Nana types have flowers 1–2in (25–50mm) wide on plants 9–15in (23–38cm) high; double-flowered forms have flowers about 2in (5cm) wide on plants 1–2ft (30–60cm) high. Stellata types have star-like flowers 1–1 ½in (25–36mm) wide on plants about 2ft (60cm) high.
