FLOWERING HOUSEPLANTS are more permanent features indoors than flowering potted plants, which have an ephemeral nature. When they are not flowering, they can be placed in a conservatory or heated greenhouse, depending on the time of year.
Chenille Plant, Foxtail, Philippine Medusa, Red Cattail, Red-Hot Cat’s Tail: Acalypha hispida
Earlier known as Acalypha sanderi, this woody shrub eventually needs a greenhouse border or large pot in a conservatory, but is an ideal houseplant when young. It produces bright scarlet flowers in long, pendulous tassels in summer and into autumn. One of the forms is shown here.
Height: 3–4ft (90cm–1.2m), up to 8ft (2.4m) or more in a greenhouse border |
Spread: 1 ½–2 ½ft (45–75cm), up to 5ft (1.5m) or more in a greenhouse border |
Winter: 59–64°F (15–18°C). Full sun |
Summer: 61–75°F (16–24°C). Bright light without full sun |
Care: During winter, keep the compost slightly moist, but water freely in summer. Feed every 2 weeks from late spring to late summer. Repot in late winter or early spring when roots fill the pot, usually every 2–3 years. |
|
Propagation: Take 4–5in (10–13cm) stem-tip cuttings in late spring or early summer and insert in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand. Place in 61–75°F (16–24°C). |
