Earlier known as Lachenalia tricolor, this bulbous plant has strap-like leaves that arch slightly at their tips. They are pale green, about 9in (23cm) long, flecked and spotted in pale purple. Nodding, tubular, bell-shaped yellow flowers with red markings and green edges appear from midwinter to early spring. Varieties include ‘Aurea’ (orange-yellow).

Height: 9–12in (23–30cm)

Spread: 9in (23cm)

Winter: 41–55°F (7–13°C) when in flower; avoid high temperatures. Direct light without full sun

Summer: Not applicable

Care: Keep compost evenly moist while flowering and continue until after the foliage dies. Keep compost dry until late summer, then repot into a clean pot and fresh compost.

Propagation: Although plants can be kept from season to season, fresh plants are usually bought each year.
