Cape Cowslip: Lachenalia aloides
Earlier known as Lachenalia tricolor, this bulbous plant has strap-like leaves that arch slightly at their tips. They are pale green, about 9in (23cm) long, flecked and spotted in pale purple. Nodding, tubular, bell-shaped yellow flowers with red markings and green edges appear from midwinter to early spring. Varieties include ‘Aurea’ (orange-yellow).
