Brazilian Gloxinia, Florist’s Gloxinia, Gloxinia, Violet Slipper Gloxinia: Sinningia speciosa
Earlier known as Gloxinia speciosa, this tuberous-rooted plant has fleshy, velvety, almost stemless, large, oblong, dark-green leaves up to 8in (20cm) long. Bell-shaped flowers, 2–4in (5–10cm) long and 3in (7.5cm) across, appear from late spring to late summer. Colors include violet and purple. There are several named cultivars in white, red, pink, and purple, some with colored or crimped edges. Most Gloxinias are bought when buds are just showing color, and flowers continue for 8 or more weeks.
