Bird’s Nest Bromeliad: Nidularium innocentii

This urn-forming bromeliad has a large rosette of finely tooth-edged, strap-like, glossy-surfaced, brownish-green leaves with metallic-purple undersides. During summer, a short stem arises from the urn, bearing 6–8 bracts surrounded by a few small, white flowers. There are several forms, including striatum (wide yellow stripes on the leaves and rose-red bracts) and purpureum (purplish-brown leaves).

Height: 15–18in (38–45cm)

Spread: 15–18in (38–45cm)

Winter: 55–61°F (13–16°C). Indirect light

Summer: 61–75°F (16–24°C). Light shade

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist but the urn filled with water; in summer, water moderately and keep the urn filled, and feed every 4 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot in early summer.

Propagation: Plants are usually short-lived; once the flowers fade, the rosette dies and offsets continue growing. Detach them in spring, transfer to individual pots, and place in 64–70°F (18–21°C).
