Properly known as Rhododendron simsii, this small, bushy, evergreen shrub is encouraged in garden centers to flower from mid- to late winter. The small, narrowly oval to pear-shaped, dark-green leaves create an attractive background for the funnel-shaped flowers. Colors include crimson, salmon, pink, and white, in single- and double-flowered forms. There are also bicolored forms.

Height: 1–1 ½ft (30–45cm) when in a pot

Spread: 15–18in (38–45cm) when in a pot

Winter: 50–59°F (10–15°C); avoid high temperatures. Direct light without full sun, or indirect light

Summer: Not applicable

Care: Keep compost moist when the plant is flowering. No feeding is needed. After flowering, it can be planted in a garden.

Propagation: Buy fresh plants each year.
