Bromeliads and Air Plants
BROMELIADS are a diverse group of plants; some grow at ground level, while others known as air plants are at home in trees. Some have attractive foliage, others spectacular flowers. A few have both qualities. Many have ‘urns’ at their centers, through which they can be watered and fed. Remember to tip out old water and replenish with fresh water every 3–4 weeks. Mist regularly as they enjoy a humid atmosphere.
Amazonian Zebra Plant, Urn Plant: Aechmea chantinii
This has a rosette of spine-edged and tipped green leaves, 12–15in (30–38cm) long and 2–2 ½in (5–6cm) wide. Leaves are cross-banded in silver-gray on both sides. During late summer and into autumn, orange to bright-red flowers develop.
Height: 1 ½–2 ½ft (45–75cm) |
Spread: 15–18in (38–45cm) |
Winter: 55–64°F (13–18°C). Indirect light |
Summer: 64–80°F (18–27°C). Indirect light or light shade |
Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and the urn full of water; in summer, water more freely, keeping the urn full of water. From late spring to late summer, feed every 4 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer applied to the compost and in the urn. |
|
Propagation: Once a plant has flowered, the urn slowly dies and growth is taken over by offsets growing around it. Cut off the main plant at compost level. Once offsets are 1⁄3–½ the size of a full-grown parent plant, sever one close to its base with a sharp knife. Allow the cut surface to dry for 1–2 days then pot it into a clean pot with well-drained compost. Use a thin stake for support if necessary. Place in 64–70°F (18–21°C). |
