Popular houseplant sold from early autumn to spring. Shuttlecock-like flowers, some fragrant, appear above round, marble-colored leaves. Colors include pink, white, or red, and pastel shades.

Height: There are several strains, including standard (about 12in [30cm] high), intermediate (about 9in [23cm] high), and miniature (about 6in [15cm] high)

Spread: See above; most plants are about the same width as they are high

Winter: 55–59°F (13–15°C) from when buds show color. Direct light without full sun, or indirect light

Summer: 55–59°F (13–15°C). Indirect light

Care: When flowering or buds are showing color, keep compost moist and feed every 2–3 weeks. Most plants are discarded after the flowers fade, but if you decide to keep the plant, reduce the amount of water, gradually drying off the corm (still in the compost and pot), and place in a cool, airy place. In late summer, repot into a clean pot and fresh compost. Water the compost and place in a cool, bright greenhouse. When shoots and leaves start to develop, slowly increase the temperature and amount of water.

Propagation: Plants can be raised from seeds, but this is best left to experts as it takes 12–15 months to produce large plants.
