African Violet, Usambava Violet: Saintpaulia ionantha
Small, evergreen plant with velvet-textured, dark- to mid-green, heart-shaped leaves and small purple, violet-like flowers with bright golden-yellow eyes, mainly from early summer to early autumn. There are many strains and nowadays you can have African Violets in flower at any time of year. The range of flower types includes single, semi-double, double, frilled, star, bicolor, and multicolor. Some have all-green leaves, others are variegated, spoon-edged, or serrated. There are also trailing types.

Care: Keep compost moist in summer and winter, but not continually saturated. From late spring to late summer, feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. No repotting is necessary. |

Propagation: Take leaf-stem cuttings during summer and insert leaf-stems in equal parts moist peat and sharp sand. Place in 64–70°F (18–24°C). |
