The Edyn garden sensor launched as a Kickstarter project, was designed by Yves Behar and his FuseProject and is recently exclusive to Home Depot though some are still available elsewhere.

Consider this a wifi thermostat for your garden. I love having greenery in and around my home but it’s sometimes (read: often) difficult to know just how to keep plants and vegetables healthy and strong — or to know exactly what they need. Water is the one I mess up when it gets really hot and dry, winter or summer. Introducing Edyn, the sleek smart sensor that gives you advice (in real time) on how to take care of your garden.

This small soil probe connects you to your garden in a tangible way — so you can truly enjoy the fruits of your labor — and the sleek aesthetic won’t detract from the natural beauty of your green space!

As a SMART HOME fan, I jumped immediately when I saw there was something that would tell me exactly how your garden is feeling.

By using actual data from your personal garden and local weather conditions, you will be able to anticipate any plant problems that might arise — before you’re left wondering what mistake you made.

The Backstory

Founded by Jason Aramburu, an ecologist and soil scientist (with a penchant for smart and connected devices and apps!), Edyn’s vision is “To change the way we grow food.” Aramburu started Edyn via a Kickstarter campaign back in 2014, after working on a variety of projects — from rainforests in Panama to farms in Africa. After his worldly research, he embarked on Edyn in the hopes of helping us all live more sustainably, while cultivating healthier plants and lusher gardens.

The Edyn app pulls data in realtime from the Sensor to give you a quick snapshot on how your garden’s doing.

How It Works

All too often, we don’t know about problems in our garden until it’s way too late: the plants are dead and past the point of no return. The Edyn garden sensor eases these worries by tracking light, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition, and moisture — so you’ll know exactly how your garden is feeling and what it needs.

Simply place it directly into the bed you are monitoring, download the app, and watch your thumb turn greener! The sensor cross-references your soil data with your local weather conditions, so you get completely customized gardening advice. Curious about how a new sprout will survive in your garden? The app will tell you historical trends like how hot it was last summer or how much light you’ve had in the past. And Edyn also has a whole database of 5,000+ plant varieties, so it can recommend the ones that will work best for your soil and your conditions.

Here’s my roof deck with one of my two Edyn’s. This deck is blistering hot in the summer and I lost plants last year. So far, so good.

In addition to the garden sensor, Edyn also has a water valve (sold separately) that connects directly with whatever irrigation system you already have set up and links to the sensor and app. It will water your garden when it needs it — so you won’t worry about overwatering or underwatering your plants ever again.

Edyn also offers a smart Water Valve: it works with your current irrigation system, the Edyn Sensor, and data of local weather conditions to automatically water your plants when they need it.

Perfect For

Seasoned growers and budding gardeners alike. You can have two green thumbs or none, but either way Edyn is sure to increase the livelihood of your garden regardless of your natural growing skills. Plus, in combination with the water valve, it’s ideal for anyone who is a regular traveler but still wants to keep a fresh, healthy garden at home: say goodbye to the days when you had to pay a neighbor to come water your plants while you’re away on a trip. Happy planting!
