Marimo Moss Ball

The first thing that must be mentioned when introducing Marimo moss balls: They’re not technically moss but a form of algae that grows as a sphere. The shape is maintained with the consistent movement of underwater currents. Even in nature, Marimo balls are slow growers, reportedly increasing by about 5 millimeters in diameter per year. So if you want an aquatic ornament that will look mostly the same for years, Marimo balls are a good choice!

Survival strategy

Because these plants live underwater, it’s best to keep them completely out of direct sun—some parts of the plant may become brown if exposed to too much sun. They seem to be fine receiving no more than 100 foot-candles as a daily high. The water may become murky and should be changed occasionally—I simply rinse the container, scrubbing with my hand. No soaps or detergents!

Growth strategy

People don’t buy Marimo moss balls in the hopes of growing them to a significantly larger size, as they grow quite slowly. It seems that the 300–800 foot-candle range will yield a comfortable rate of growth. Again, avoid direct sun, and change the water whenever you notice it getting murky.

Observations from Marimo Moss Ball Parenthood

Day 1

Received these in the mail—yes, they shipped in a sealed plastic bag and must have been in transit for about a week. I put them in a jar with fresh water.

6 months

I wish I had thought to measure my Marimo moss balls when I first got them. Today, the big one measures 55 millimeters in diameter.

Sometimes I let my smaller air plants do their weekly bath with the Marimo moss balls. Since the overall spherical shape is maintained by currents of water, it would seem prudent to give your Marimo moss balls a gentle swirl on a regular basis, though I have not yet seen what would happen if you absolutely never moved them.

1 year

The big ball is now 59 millimeters in diameter. I guess the average of 5 millimeters per year works out!
