Cacti and Other Succulents

CACTI and SUCCULENTS are usually grouped together, but they are botanically different. All cacti, with the exception of pereskias, are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. Cacti belong exclusively to the Cactaceae family and are characterized by having areoles (like small pincushions) from which spines, short hooks, or woolly hairs grow. Most cacti are native to dry regions, but a few live in the branches of trees in forests. Both cacti and other succulents are popular indoors, and many bear flowers.

When should you repot cacti and other succulents? This is usually done in late spring or early summer but the frequency depends on the stage and speed of growth of the plant. Although repotting is required annually when young, later it is only necessary when roots fill the pot, which can be every 2–3 years. Even then, repot only if essential and into an only slightly larger pot. Indeed, most cacti grow quite well in small pots. With succulents, use a shallow pot rather than a deep one.

This succulent has white threads along the edges of its tapering dark-green, leathery leaves, which are 1in (25mm) wide. Eventually (though seldom seen on houseplants), it develops a long flower spike of purple and green bell-like flowers.

Height: 9–15in (23–38cm)

Spread: 9–18in (23–45cm)

Winter: 45–50°F (7–10°C). Full sun

Summer: 50–61°F (10–16°C). Full sun, or direct light without full sun

Care: In winter, keep compost slightly moist; in summer, water freely. From spring to late summer, feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer.
