Red Pineapple, Wild Pineapple: Ananas bracteatus

Also known as Ananas sagenaria, this slow-growing pineapple forms a rosette of leaves similar to Ananas comosus. It has lavender-colored flowers, followed by brownish fruits. Ananas bracteatus striatus (also known as tricolor) has leaves brightly colored in green, cream, and pink stripes.

Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and increase watering frequency as the plant becomes more active, allowing compost to dry out slightly between each application Throughout summer, feed every 4 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot in spring, usually every other year. |

Propagation: During spring, sever offsets from around the plant’s base and allow cut ends to dry for a day, then transfer them to compost in a pot. Place in 70°F (21°C). |
