Prayer Plant, Ten Commandments: Maranta leuconeura
Evergreen perennial with beautiful leaves that close in the evening and are held erect, as if in prayer. Young leaves have an emerald-green background, with brown-purple blotches between the veins. The undersides are gray-green, shot with purple. There are several forms, including Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoveana’ (Maranta kerchoveana), widely known as Rabbit’s Tracts or Rabbit’s Foot (descriptive of the leaves). At first, the leaves are emerald-green with red blotches between the main veins, but with age become dark green with maroon blotches. Maranta leuconeura ‘Erythrophylla’ (Herringbone Plant)—also known as Maranta leuconeura tricolor, Maranta erythrophylla, and Maranta leuconera ‘Erthyroneura’—has leaves with a deep olive-green background, grayish-green edges, vivid red veins, and bright green, irregular-edged markings along the midrib.
