Other Flowering Potted Plants

  • Begonia – Elatior types (Elatior Begonias, Hiemalis Begonias, Large-Flowered Winter Begonias): properly known as hybrids between Begonia socotrana and Begonia x tuberhybrida, these are similar to the Lorraine types, but with larger flowers, up to 2in (5cm) wide. Colors include yellow, white, pink, and salmon-orange, in single- and double-flowered forms.

  • Begonia – Lorraine types (Lorraine Begonias): properly known as hybrids between Begonia socotrana (Grape-Leaf Begonia) and Begonia dregei (Maple-Leaf Begonia), these floriferous plants have round, mid-green leaves about 3in (7.5cm) across and masses of deep-pink flowers, 1in (25mm) wide, during mid- and late winter. Several cultivars. Colors include salmon-orange, white, deep orange, and yellow.
  • Begonia semperflorens (Wax Begonia): bushy and floriferous plant grown as a half-hardy annual in temperate climates and planted into flowerbeds. Colors from white, through pink and red, to scarlet during summer.
  • Browallia speciosa (Bush Violet): small, bushy, tender plant, grown as a half-hardy annual, with tubular, violet-shaped flowers from early summer to early autumn.
  • Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar Periwinkle): earlier known as Vinca rosea, this evergreen sub-shrub bears white, lavender, or rose flowers with darker-colored throats throughout summer and into early autumn.
  • Chrysanthemum frutescens (Marguerite): now properly known as Argyranthemum frutescens, this perennial sub-shrubby plant has branching stems and gray-green, fern-like leaves. Single, white or pale-yellow flowers, about 2in (5cm) wide, appear throughout summer.

  • Chrysanthemum x morifolium (Pot Chrysanthemum): now often known as Dendranthema x grandiflorum, this is a popular houseplant with dark-green, lobed leaves up to 5in (13cm) long. Single or double flowers, 2–4in wide (5–10cm), on plants about 12in (30cm) high.
  • Gerbera jamesonii (Barberton Daisy, Transvaal Daisy): large, daisy-like flowers from early to late summer. Mid-green leaves, 6in (15cm) long, are deeply lobed and woolly beneath. Single- and double-flowered forms in many colors, including yellow, orange, pink, red, and white. The center of each flower forms a large yellow disc.
