Lacquered Wine Cup: Aechmea ‘Foster’s Favorite’
This relatively small aechmea, with sparse, tapering, deep wine-red leaves forming a central urn, develops a flower spike of coral petals tipped blue in late summer.
Height: 12–15in (30–38cm) |
Spread: 12–18in (30–45cm) |
Winter: 55–59°F (13–15°C). Indirect light |
Summer: 59–75°F (15–24°C). Indirect light to light shade |
Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and the urn full of water; in summer, water more freely, keeping the urn full of water. Feed every 4 weeks from late spring to late summer with weak liquid fertilizer applied to the compost and in the urn. |
|
Propagation: Once a plant has flowered, the rosette slowly dies and growth is taken over by offsets growing around it. Cut off the main plant at compost level. Once offsets are 1⁄3–½ the size of a full-grown parent plant, sever one close to its base with a sharp knife. Allow the cut surface to dry for 1–2 days then pot it into a clean pot with well-drained compost. Use a thin stake for support if necessary. Place in 64–70°F (18–21°C). |
