Half-hardy in temperate climates, this cormous plant is ideal for growing indoors. Mainly the hybrids are grown. The wide color range includes shades of red, yellow and purple, white and multicolors. Flowering is during late spring and early summer, with several star-shaped, flat-faced, 6-petaled flowers, about 1 ½in (36mm) wide, on each stem.

Care: In late summer or early autumn, plant 5 corms in a pot 5in (13cm) wide, using loam-based compost. Water the compost and place the pot in 37–41°F (3–5°C). In late winter or early spring, as growth begins, provide more water and gradually move the pot into 45–50°F (7–10°C), no higher. After flowering, allow compost to dry slightly. |

Propagation: Use fresh corms each year; old ones can be planted into a warm, wind-sheltered border outdoors. |
