Green Earth Star, Starfish Plant: Cryptanthus acaulis
This stemless bromeliad has wavy, tooth-edged, pale- to mid-green leaves that form a low rosette. Three-petaled, scented, rather insignificant white flowers appear at any time of year, but it is invariably grown for its attractive leaves. The larger form argenteus is peppered with silvery scales, while ruber (sometimes ‘Rubra’) has a purple-brown shade over the green. Roseo-pictus’s leaves are longitudinally striped in several colors.
