Easter Lily, White Trumpet Lily: Lilium longiflorum
This bulbous plant is widely grown as a houseplant. During mid- and late summer, it produces heavily fragrant, trumpet-shaped, white flowers with golden pollen, 5–7in (13–18cm) long and 5in (13cm) across. Several other lilies are grown indoors, including Lilium auratum (Golden-Rayed Lily), Lilium speciosum (Japanese Lily), and mid-century hybrids.
Height: 2 ½–3ft (75–90cm) |

Summer: See below |
Care: As soon as bulbs are available in autumn, pot them singly into 6–8in (15–20cm) pots, using soil-based compost. Cover the bulb’s top with 1 ½–2in (36–50mm) of compost. Water the compost and place in a dark position with a temperature of about 37–41°F (3–5°C) to encourage root development. Keep compost lightly moist. When new shoots appear, move into light shade; gradually increase light and raise the temperature to 46–50°F (8–10°C)—no higher. When flowers fade, reduce to 37–41°F (3–5°C) and keep compost moist to prevent bulbs drying out. |

Propagation: Buy fresh bulbs each year. After flowering, place the pot in a cool, shaded position outdoors. Plant bulbs into a border early the following spring. |
