Daffodil: Narcissus
Many types of daffodils can be encouraged to flower indoors; most popular is the large-trumpet type with one flower on each stem. Suitable varieties include ‘Dutch Master’ (yellow), ‘King Alfred’ (yellow), and ‘Spellbinder’ (yellow and white). Bulbs specially prepared by garden centers for early flowering are essential.
Height: 15–18in (38–45cm) |
Spread: 12in (30cm) when several bulbs are planted in a pot 7–9in (18–23cm) wide |
Winter: See below |
Summer: See below |
Care: In late summer, select a pot 7–9in (18–23cm) wide and half fill it with damp bulb-fiber or potting compost. Place bulbs close together on top, noses level with the container’s rim. Pack further bulb-fiber or compost around each bulb, so the surface is ½in (12mm) below the pot’s rim. Thoroughly water the potting mixture, put the pot in a black plastic bag, and place in a cool shed (37–41°F [3–5°C]). Regularly check compost is moist. Leave bulbs in the bag for 12–15 weeks, until shoots are 4in (10cm) high. Remove the bag and take bulbs indoors, slowly increasing temperature from 45°F (7°C) to 59°F (15°C). Keep compost moist. |
